Kevin Overton, a 6-foot-5 guard from Oklahoma City, has committed to transferring to Auburn University from Texas Tech, marking his third collegiate team in as many seasons. This move comes at a pivotal time for Auburn’s basketball program, as the team seeks to rebuild following the departure of key players.

Early Career at Drake

Overton began his collegiate career at Drake University, where he made an immediate impact. As a true freshman, he started all 35 games, averaging 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. His performance earned him Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Freshman honors, and he was a four-time MVC Freshman of the Week. Notably, he helped lead Drake to the MVC Tournament championship, securing an automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. On3+6Texas Tech Red Raiders+6Texas Tech Red Raiders+6Texas Tech Red Raiders+4Texas Tech Red Raiders+4Texas Tech Red Raiders+4

Transition to Texas Tech

In April 2024, Overton transferred to Texas Tech, joining the Red Raiders for his sophomore season. In his first year with Texas Tech, he averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, primarily coming off the bench. He contributed to the team’s deep run in the NCAA Tournament, which culminated in an Elite Eight appearance. Overton’s shooting was a highlight, as he made 39 three-pointers during the season, including a season-high 20 points against Arizona in the Big 12 Championship semifinals. Texas Tech Red Raiders+1Texas Tech Red Raiders+1Reuters+1Texas Tech Red Raiders+1Texas Tech Red Raiders

Auburn’s Strategic Acquisition

Auburn’s acquisition of Overton is a strategic move to bolster their backcourt depth. With the departure of All-American Johni Broome, who concluded his eligibility to pursue a professional career, and forward Chad Baker-Mazara entering the transfer portal, Auburn faced significant gaps in their roster. Head coach Bruce Pearl has expressed confidence in Overton’s ability to contribute to the team’s success. Overton’s quick-release left-handed shooting, deep range, and ability to drive efficiently align well with Auburn’s fast-paced playing style. His defensive tenacity and willingness to engage in “dirty work” further enhance his fit within Pearl’s system.auburnobserver.com

Looking Ahead

As Overton transitions to Auburn, expectations are high for his role in the upcoming season. His previous experience in high-pressure tournament games, combined with his scoring ability and defensive prowess, positions him as a key player for the Tigers. Auburn fans are eager to see how Overton’s skills will integrate into the team’s dynamic and contribute to their pursuit of success in the Southeastern Conference and beyond.
