Georgia baseball slides in rankings after getting swept at Vanderbilt
The Georgia Bulldogs have dropped four spots in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll after a 1-3 week. Georgia baseball is now ranked No. 9. Interestingly, Georgia is ranked one spot ahead of the No. 10 Vanderbilt Commodores, who just swept Georgia in a three-game series.
Georgia did earn a midweek 5-2 win over No. 22 Georgia Tech at the Atlanta Braves’ stadium. Georgia is 33-9 on the season including 10-8 in SEC play. Six of Georgia’s eight SEC losses have come against Vanderbilt and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns (both were road sweeps).
Georgia lost to Vanderbilt 3-1 on Thursday, 13-7 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday. The Bulldogs did not have the offensive performance they were hoping for on the road.
“It’s really hard to win when we put their guy in the stretch three times total today,” said Georgia baseball manager Wes Johnson after getting swept against Vanderbilt. “We didn’t get on base.”
“I thought we threw the ball fine for the most part. They had three or four infield hits and made the most of it. It’s kind of crazy as you’ve heard me talk about 0-2, 1-2 counts, and they got three big hits in those counts. Against good teams in tight ball games, that’s going to be the difference, and it was today.”
This week, Georgia baseball plays the No. 2 Clemson Tigers on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Georgia also has a three-game SEC series at home against the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners from Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26.
