Nico Iamaleava’s Rise and Departure
Nico Iamaleava, a highly touted recruit from Long Beach, California, joined Tennessee with immense expectations. In the 2024 season, he threw for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns, leading the Volunteers to a 10–3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance. However, tensions began to surface regarding his Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal. Originally valued at $2.4 million annually, Iamaleava’s representatives sought an increase to $4 million. This demand led to missed practices and meetings, culminating in his decision to enter the transfer portal on April 11, 2025.
On April 20, 2025, Iamaleava committed to UCLA, where he is expected to be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. His younger brother, Madden Iamaleava, is also transferring from Arkansas to UCLA, reuniting with Nico and further strengthening the family’s presence on the West Coast.
Tennessee’s Response and the Rise of Jake Merklinger
In the wake of Iamaleava’s departure, Tennessee has turned to Jake Merklinger, a promising sophomore who appeared in two games during the 2024 season. Merklinger showcased his potential with a 66.7% completion rate and 22 rushing yards in limited action. Head coach Josh Heupel has expressed confidence in Merklinger’s abilities, noting a “different feel” for him in his second year.
While Merklinger is set to take over as the starting quarterback, Tennessee is also exploring other options to bolster the position. Reports indicate that UCLA’s Joey Aguilar, who briefly transferred to Tennessee after Iamaleava’s exit, is now heading back to UCLA. Aguilar had been in position to be UCLA’s starting quarterback but found himself displaced by Iamaleava’s arrival.
