Georgia Football Suffers Setback at the Hands of SEC Rivals
The Georgia Bulldogs have consistently done an excellent job of developing defensive linemen, but they will not get the chance to work with one of the best in the transfer portal.
Georgia was one of four teams “heavily in the mix” for Syracuse Orange defensive lineman Maraad Watson, who entered the transfer portal after a freshman All-American season in 2024.
But instead of entrusting his development to Georgia’s defensive line talent factory, Watson has instead elected to join with the team the Bulldogs defeated in last season’s SEC championship game.
Per Hayes Fawcett of On3, Watson has committed to transfer to the Texas Longhorns.
That means the Bulldogs will now need to prepare to go against a player who flashed significant promise as a run defender in 2024, totaling 13 run stops that represented a failure for the offense, per Pro Football Focus.
Georgia faces Texas in its final in-conference game of the 2025 regular season in Athens on November 15.
The Bulldogs beat Texas 30-15 in Austin in the regular season last year, before then prevailing 22-19 over the Longhorns in the SEC title game.
Yet Watson has decided Texas is the best program to help take the next step after impressing in the ACC. Georgia will look to prove him wrong when the Bulldogs go against him in November.
