In a monumental moment for Auburn University and college basketball, senior forward Chaney Johnson has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Oscar Robertson Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top men’s college basketball player. This recognition, bestowed by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), marks a significant milestone in Auburn’s basketball history and highlights Johnson’s exceptional talent and dedication.

Background and Journey to Auburn

Born in Alabaster, Alabama, Chaney Johnson’s basketball journey began at Thompson High School, where he earned a Birmingham all-region honorable mention and all-county second-team selection in 2020, averaging a team-leading 13.4 points and 4.4 assists per game during his senior campaign.  After high school, Johnson transferred to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where he played three seasons and became a standout player. During the 2022-23 season, he started and played in all 35 games, earning Gulf South Conference Player of the Year honors by averaging 15.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He also became the first UAH athlete to win Alabama’s Small College Athlete of the Year award in 2023.

Transfer to Auburn and Impact

In April 2023, Johnson transferred to Auburn University to compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl described Johnson’s journey as “the perfect example of the great American dream,” highlighting his growth and achievements from high school to college basketball.

At Auburn, Johnson made an immediate impact. In a standout performance against Georgia State, he led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 12-of-14 from the field, contributing significantly to Auburn’s 100-59 victory.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy is one of the most prestigious individual awards in college basketball, named after the Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. Johnson’s receipt of this award places him among the elite players in the history of college basketball. His exceptional performance throughout the 2024-25 season, characterized by consistent scoring, leadership, and contributions to Auburn’s success, earned him this distinguished honor.
