Detroit Lions release backup quarterback on eve of 2025 NFL draft
From was the fourth quarterback in the pecking order after the Lions signed veteran Kyle Allen during free agency. Jared Goff is the entrenched franchise quarterback Hendon Hooker will have to fend off Allen to regain his QB2 role this offseason and in training camp.
“I mean, look, it’s just competition,” Lions general manager Brad Holmes said of the QB2 situation earlier this month. “That’s all it is. I mean, look, we like Hendon, excited about him.
“But still got high hopes for him, but nobody’s gonna be given a job either. So if Hendon wants to be the number two quarterback, then win the No. 2 quarterback job.”
This move doesn’t change anything heading into the draft, it just opens another roster spot ahead a busy week of additions via the draft and undrafted rookie free agents.
In his first two seasons with the Lions, Joseph has showcased his exceptional playmaking skills, highlighted by his ability to read the game and create turnovers. His ball-hawking instincts led to several critical interceptions, helping the team in high-pressure situations. The extension ensures that the Lions will retain a player who has not only contributed on the field but has also emerged as a leader in the locker room.
By securing Joseph for the next four years, the Lions are positioning themselves for a bright future on defense. The deal provides the team with financial flexibility while allowing them to concentrate on other areas of need as they continue to build a competitive roster. Joseph’s athleticism and versatility make him a valuable asset, capable of playing multiple roles within the defense.
As the Lions look to make a deeper playoff push, the extension of Joseph signals their commitment to developing a cohesive and formidable defense. The team’s management and coaching staff are optimistic that Joseph will continue to grow and elevate his game, further establishing him as one of the premier safeties in the NFL. The Lions’ decision to extend Joseph is a clear indication of their belief in his potential, ensuring that he remains a key part of their plans moving forward.
