Following his conviction for a 2010 sexual assault and murder in Chilton County, an Alabama man on death row was put to death by lethal injection on Thursday.

An Alabama death row inmate was executed Thursday for the 2010 sexual assault and fatal stabbing of 44-year-old Tracy Lynn Wilemon in Chilton County. James Osgood, 55, was declared dead at 6:35 p.m. after receiving a lethal injection at a prison in southern Alabama, according to Governor Kay Ivey’s office.

Prior to the execution, Governor Ivey informed corrections Commissioner John Hamm that she would not grant clemency and instructed him to move forward with the death sentence.

In her statement, Ivey described the murder as premeditated, horrific, and disturbing. She emphasized that Osgood’s execution served justice for the brutal crime. Osgood was convicted in 2014 for slitting Wilemon’s throat after he and his girlfriend, Tonya Vandyke, sexually assaulted her in 2010. Wilemon was reportedly Vandyke’s cousin.

Governor Ivey stated that Osgood and his accomplice, who will remain incarcerated for life, were inspired by a violent Hollywood scene and committed a senseless act of violence. She added that Wilemon’s life was taken in an irreversible way, offering hopes that her family could find some closure.

In a phone interview from prison, Osgood told the Associated Press he did not appeal his sentence, acknowledging his guilt and accepting his fate. He also stated he believed in the principle of “an eye for an eye” and expressed regret for taking Wilemon’s life, while apologizing to her family. However, he noted he would not ask for forgiveness, as he understood they could not offer it.

Wilemon’s family had supported the death sentence during the trial, though it is uncertain if any relatives were present for Osgood’s execution, which marked the 14th death execution in the U.S. this year.

On the day before Osgood’s execution, another man, Moises Sandoval Mendoza, was executed in Texas for the 2004 killing of a young mother, Rachelle O’Neil Tolleson, and setting her body on fire. Mendoza, 41, was pronounced dead after a lethal injection at Huntsville State Penitentiary.
