Georgia Bulldogs add three players from transfer portal
ATHENS — Media reports confirm that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has landed three key additions from the NCAA transfer portal, strengthening the Bulldogs’ roster ahead of the 2025 season. Army edge rusher Elo Modozie, Miami defensive lineman Joshua Horton, and Illinois running back Josh McCray are all set to join the program, bringing experience and depth to both sides of the ball.
Modozie, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound outside linebacker, arrives in Athens after a breakout sophomore season at Army. A native of St. Augustine, Florida, Modozie totaled 34 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks over 14 games in 2024. He originally signed with Army as a wide receiver in the 2022 class before switching to defense. Now, with two years of eligibility remaining, he returns to the Southeast to bolster Georgia’s edge rotation.
His addition comes at a crucial time, as the Bulldogs lost three key edge defenders—Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams, and Chaz Chambliss—to the NFL after the 2024 season. Rising junior Damon Wilson also transferred to Missouri in January. Modozie will join a young group of pass rushers that includes Quintavius Johnson, Gabe Harris, Isaiah Gibson, Chase Linton, and Kris Jones.
Joining Modozie on the defensive side is Joshua Horton, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound lineman who transfers from Miami. A native of Fairburn, Georgia, Horton played at Langston Hughes High School and was ranked among the top 50 defensive linemen nationally in the 2023 recruiting class. He redshirted in 2023 and saw limited action in 2024 due to injury, appearing in seven games over two seasons and recording four tackles and half a sack.
Despite the setbacks, Horton brings upside and versatility to the Georgia defensive front. He’s big enough to contribute at defensive tackle but athletic enough to slide outside to play a five- or 4i-technique. His arrival fills a need for Georgia following the departure of veteran linemen Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse. Horton joins a rotation that features returners Christen Miller, Jordan Hall, and Xzavier McLeod, along with second-year players Nasir Johnson, Nnamdi Ogboko, and Jordan Thomas. Georgia also signed the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle, Elijah Griffin, in the 2025 class.
On offense, the Bulldogs added a physical presence to their backfield with Josh McCray, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound running back who spent the past four seasons at Illinois. The former Enterprise (Ala.) High School standout rushed for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024 on 117 carries. He also caught 13 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.
