Georgia women’s tennis advances to NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, sweeps California 4-0

No. 1 Georgia women’s tennis swept No. 19 California in its final home match of the season in the NCAA Super Regional on Friday. With the 4-0 win, the Bulldogs advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for a third-consecutive season.

This is also the second-straight season in which Georgia has eliminated California in the NCAA Super Regionals, winning 4-2 in Athens in 2024.

Aysegul Mert and Hayden Mulberry opened the doubles matches with a 6-2 win for the Bulldogs against Berta Passola Folch and Naomi Xu on court three. No. 68 Anastasiia Lopata and Guillermina Grant clinched the doubles point on court two. The junior-senior duo defeated Greta Greco Lucchina and Lan Mi 6-4.

At the time, on court one, No. 1 Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova were tied with No. 4 Mao Mushika and Jessica Alsola 5-5.

In singles matches, No. 42 Mert took care of business on court four. She won 6-1, 6-0 in consecutive sets against Passola Folch. No. 74 Grant put the Bulldogs up 3-0, defeating Greco Lucchina 6-2, 6-4 on court five.

Sofia Rojas clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Xu on court six.

Courts one through three had unfinished matches. On court one, No. 2 Vidmanova fell to No. 32 Mushika 7-6 (7-2) in the first tiebreaker set but was dominating in the second set 4-0.

On court two, No. 17 Lopata also lost her first match to No. 59 Alsola 7-5. Lopata was up 3-2 in their second set at the time. Reasco faced No. 44 Mi on court three, winning 6-3 in the first and was tied 4-4 when the match was clinched.

Georgia’s wins secures its place in the NCAA Championships next weekend, starting on May 15 at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The Bulldogs will face eighth-seeded Duke, who defeated ninth-seeded Auburn 4-2.
