Hutchinson of UAlbany is “incredibly grateful” for his Baltimore Ravens deal

Ozzie Hutchinson’s journey from a late-blooming high school athlete in Poughkeepsie to signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and unwavering determination. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 310 pounds, Hutchinson’s path to the NFL was anything but conventional, marked by perseverance through injuries and a steadfast commitment to his craft.

Hutchinson’s football career began somewhat serendipitously. Initially drawn to soccer, his imposing stature caught the attention of Spackenkill High School’s football coach, who persuaded him to try out for the team. Transitioning from the soccer field to the gridiron, Hutchinson quickly adapted, showcasing a natural aptitude for football that would set the stage for his future endeavors.

In 2019, Hutchinson joined the University at Albany’s football program on a quarter-scholarship. Over the next six years, he evolved into a cornerstone of the Great Danes’ offensive line, earning second-team All-Coastal Athletic Association honors in 2023. His collegiate career, however, was not without challenges. Injuries, including a torn plantar fascia and a high ankle sprain, sidelined him for several games during his final season. Despite these setbacks, Hutchinson’s determination never wavered. He returned to play the final four games of the season, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to his team.

Hutchinson’s performance at UAlbany’s Pro Day further solidified his NFL prospects. Clocking a 5.1-second 40-yard dash and completing 26 reps on the bench press, his athleticism and strength caught the attention of scouts. These metrics would have placed him among the top performers at the NFL Combine, underscoring his potential at the professional level.

Following the 2025 NFL Draft, Hutchinson received offers from multiple teams, including the Miami Dolphins. Ultimately, he chose to sign with the Baltimore Ravens, citing a strong fit within their offensive line scheme and a belief in the organization’s commitment to his development. The Ravens’ decision to offer him a contract, rather than a mere rookie minicamp invitation, speaks volumes about their confidence in his abilities.

Joining the Ravens’ rookie minicamp, Hutchinson expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity. “Just feeling super appreciative, super great that they took a chance on me,” he remarked, acknowledging the rarity of such opportunities for players from smaller programs. His sentiment reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by undrafted players and a readiness to seize the moment.

Hutchinson’s versatility on the offensive line is another asset that enhances his value to the Ravens. While some teams considered moving him to guard, the Ravens plan to keep him at tackle, his natural position. His experience playing multiple positions during his high school and college careers equips him with the adaptability necessary to meet the diverse demands of an NFL offensive line.

Beyond the field, Hutchinson’s journey is emblematic of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. From his initial foray into football to overcoming injuries and earning a spot with an NFL team, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Baltimore Ravens, Hutchinson carries with him the hopes of his hometown, his college, and all who have followed his remarkable ascent.
