The Tennessee Vols, like most programs this time of year, have had some ups and downs during spring practice. The Vols\u2019 offense, specifically, has lagged behind the defense a bit as the Vols\u2019 quarterback competition continues.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, spring practice is already nearing its end for the Tennessee Vols.<\/p>\n

Tennessee will hold its spring game on April 11 \u2014 a week from today \u2014 which will signal the end of spring practice.<\/p>\n

So far, it\u2019s been a productive spring for the Volunteers. Most of the attention has focused on\u00a0Tennessee\u2019s quarterback competition\u00a0and the\u00a0progress of the defense\u00a0under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the defense has been ahead of the offense a bit. That\u2019s not exactly a surprise \u2014 defenses are usually ahead this time of year \u2014 but that hasn\u2019t stopped some folks from expressing concern about the Vols\u2019 offense heading into the summer months.<\/p>\n

Former Vols offensive lineman sends message to Tennessee fans<\/h2>\n

Former Vols offensive lineman Ollie Lane, who played at UT under Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel, appeared on\u00a0The Sports Source\u00a0this week, and he had a message for the fans who are concerned about the offense.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one thing I will say, though, in my six years of experience playing at UT [is that] as an offense, you don\u2019t typically win those scrimmages,\u201d said Lane. \u201cIt never feels like you win those scrimmages. You might feel like you had a good scrimmage, but overall, there\u2019s so many moving parts in our offense. Especially in spring with new quarterbacks \u2014 it\u2019s hard to get all of those pieces working 100 percent of the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are going to be some mishaps. And a lot of the comments that you\u2019re going to hear [out of] a lot of scrimmages are, \u2018Well, the defense looked really good.\u2019 I don\u2019t want fans to take that into perspective and think, \u2018Well, our offense is down.\u2019 It\u2019s not going to be. Don\u2019t worry about it. These quarterbacks are gonna come along. Everything\u2019s going to start clicking at some point. Typically, your defense does just run those scrimmages. That\u2019s how those things roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are usually some overreactions in spring (remember the\u00a0Tristen Keys debacle from last month), but it\u2019s important to remember that this is the time of year when mistakes are welcomed (as long as players learn from them).<\/p>\n

No one is winning a championship in March and April. The work put in during spring practices matters a lot, but Tennessee\u2019s offense will continue to improve as the season draws closer. What we\u2019ve seen this spring is far from the version of Tennessee football that we\u2019ll see this fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
