Joel Klatt believes in DJ Lagway’s Florida Gators ahead of 2025 season with major complements for Billy Napier

We are a few months away from the start of the 2025 season for the Florida Gators but it’s not too early to talk about how things project to start the season.

Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt released his post-spring practice top 25 and placed the Gators 13th in the country, just ahead of BYU and right behind the Michigan Wolverines.

Joel Klatt praises DJ Lagway, Billy Napier
Ranking the Gators at 13th going into fall camp feels about right. They are coming off of an 8-5 season with plenty of departures, including seven draft picks and multiple high-profile UDFAs. The good thing with the Gators is how many young players got serious playing time last season.

The biggest benefactor of that was quarterback DJ Lagway. He ended up starting seven games in 2024 with a 6-1 record and, as Klatt stated, the only loss came when he left the game.

DJ Lagway, he’s one of the most exciting players in the country, and you look back at what they were able to do and establish with him last year, six and one as a starter, and the only loss is when he went down with an injury in that game against Georgia.

Those are pretty standard comments about Lagway and the Gators, especially since he projects to be the best quarterback in the nation next year. What really came across here is what Klatt said about Napier.

We all knew that he was firmly on the hotseat last year, but he didn’t let it phase him one bit.

“Billy Napier. He blocked out all the noise last year. It was noisy around Napier situation, his job status, we blocked it out. And that team, they got better, and then they got a little bit better, and then they got even more better, and then lagway took him to another level, and the defense played really well down the stretch. They hold those last four opponents to 17 points or fewer in every game. I’m just saying, like I did it, the schedule is still tough. The schedule is brutal. Like, oh, you Florida’s again, Got another one of these terrible schedules, but man, Florida’s a good team. They’re a really good team so don’t sleep on them the schedule’s the only reason that they’re kind of if you’re categorizing like my next group of teams they kind of come in at the last of that group.”

If Napier can keep the Gators playing like they did at hte end of last season, the College Football Playoff is getting to be more and more likely.
