The University of South Carolina’s basketball programs are undergoing significant transitions, marked by financial challenges, roster changes, and shifting dynamics within both the men’s and women’s teams.
Financially, the women’s basketball program, despite its on-court success, has faced substantial deficits. Reports indicate that over the past three years, the program has incurred losses totaling approximately $16.77 million, averaging $5.59 million annually. In the 2023 fiscal year alone, the program reported expenses of $10.77 million against revenues of $5.05 million, resulting in a net loss of over $5.6 million. These financial strains have sparked discussions about the sustainability of the program’s current model and the need for new revenue streams.
On the roster front, the women’s team has experienced notable player movements. Star guard MiLaysia Fulwiley, known for her dynamic play and significant contributions over two seasons, entered the transfer portal, eventually committing to LSU. Her departure, along with others, has prompted head coach Dawn Staley to actively engage in the transfer market to rebuild the team’s core. The addition of top scorer Ta’Niya Latson from Florida State and versatile center Madina Okot signifies a strategic effort to maintain the program’s competitive edge.
The men’s basketball program, under head coach Lamont Paris, has also faced its share of challenges. After a promising 2023–24 season with a 26–8 record and an NCAA tournament appearance, the team struggled in the subsequent season, finishing with a 12–20 record and a 2–16 mark in SEC play. This downturn has led to roster changes, including the loss of four players to the transfer portal, as the program seeks to regroup and rebuild.
Amid these developments, the university’s athletic department is evaluating its strategies to ensure the long-term viability and success of its basketball programs. This includes addressing financial concerns, managing roster transitions, and fostering a culture that supports both athletic excellence and fiscal responsibility.
