Ohio State Buckeyes have offered an offensive player in the transfer portal who would make plenty of sense to add

The spring transfer portal window is much less busy in college football in terms of high-end talent entering. Programs choose to do the majority of their portal work in the winter when more top players are available.

Ohio State wrapped up spring ball just over a week ago with the spring game finishing off a few weeks of work. New needs can raise coming out of the spring when the pads go on for the first time with the current team.

The Buckeyes aren’t going to make many additions in the spring portal, though they will be looking for depth in the trenches on both sides of the football.

Ohio State is one program that has offered Sam Houston State OT Orion Irving, a player who recently entered the portal. Irving is expected to visit Columbus this week and could be a potential addition for the Buckeyes with two years of eligibility remaining.

The Buckeyes don’t need starting-level additions in the portal because they went out and got Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels in the winter. Both players should end up starting for Ohio State but that isn’t locked in yet. Ian Moore and Deontae Armstrong are backup tackle options, as well as freshmen Carter Lowe and Jayvon McFadden.

Ohio State didn’t recruit the offensive line the best under former OL coach Justin Frye and they should have brought in more bodies in a couple of classes. Bringing in Irving could help the Buckeyes alleviate that and give them another tackle option for two seasons.

Irving is a 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle from Houston, Texas, and was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2023. After starting the last two years at Sam Houston State, Irving is reaching a lot of Power Four interest.

The Buckeyes will have multiple transfer portal players on campus next week and Irving is one to keep an eye on.
