OU Softball: Ailana Agbayani, an infielder for Oklahoma, is having a big impact on the Sooners.

In the world of collegiate softball, few stories are as compelling as that of Ailana Agbayani. A transfer from Brigham Young University (BYU), Agbayani has swiftly become a cornerstone of the University of Oklahoma (OU) Sooners’ softball team. Her journey from a hesitant youth to a dynamic force on the field is a testament to resilience, talent, and the power of seizing opportunities.

Born and raised in Mililani, Hawai’i, Ailana Agbayani hails from a family deeply rooted in sports. Her father, Benny Agbayani, played nearly 400 games in Major League Baseball for teams like the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, and Boston Red Sox. Her mother, Niela, was a standout softball player at the University of Hawai’i. Despite this lineage, Ailana’s initial interests leaned more towards “girly things” like dresses and playing dress-up. In fact, she contemplated quitting softball after middle school, feeling discouraged. Agbayani’s collegiate journey began at BYU, where she made an immediate impact. In her freshman season, she started 52 games, boasting a .337 batting average with 59 hits, including two home runs and four doubles. She also showcased her versatility by stealing 12 bases and playing stellar defense at shortstop, committing just seven errors in 155 chances. In addition to her offensive prowess, Agbayani contributed as a pitcher, making 17 appearances with a 5-3 record and a 2.43 ERA. Seeking new challenges and opportunities, Agbayani transferred to the University of Oklahoma, joining a program renowned for its excellence. Her transition was seamless, as she quickly adapted to the team’s high standards and competitive environment. In her first season with the Sooners, Agbayani has been instrumental in their success.

One of her standout performances came in a pivotal game against Texas. With the bases loaded, Agbayani delivered a grand slam, tying her career high with five RBIs and propelling the Sooners to a 7-6 victory.
