Tennessee football receive some bad news that Vols fans should’ve seen coming

The Tennessee Vols football program received some unfortunate news on Wednesday that fans likely saw coming.

2026 four-star defensive lineman Tyson Bacon announced his decommitment from Tennessee on Wednesday night.

“First off I want to thank Coach Heupel, Coach Chop, Coach Garner, Coach Banks, Coach Ayers, and the University Of Tennessee for taking my commitment,” wrote Bacon in a tweet. “After careful consideration, I want to open back up my recruiting. I want to make sure I’m making the best decision for my future.”

Bacon, 6-foot-3/263 lbs from Hoover, AL, has seen his recruiting stock increase in recent months, which has led to more interest from big-time programs (Bacon is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 34 overall defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class).

The four-star recruit told 247Sports earlier this year that he was still planning on checking out other programs despite his commitment to the Vols.

“I’m still committed (to Tennessee), but I’m just making sure I am enjoying the recruitment process and where I wind up at is where I will thrive and enjoy the culture the most,” said Bacon to 247Sports in February. “I want to see what schools have to offer and, like I said, I want to make sure I have all the information I need.”

Bacon specifically noted to On3 in February that he’s “definitely” interested in the Wolverines, noting that Michigan is “almost like home now”.

Tennessee will remain in the mix for Bacon, but they’re going to have their work cut out for them if they’re going to lure the coveted defensive lineman back to Rocky Top. The Vols, for now, are scheduled to receive an official visit from Bacon in June.
