Tennessee football spring transfer portal: News, updates from Vols insiders following Nico Iamaleava’s exit
The Tennessee football spring game was overshadowed by a public split between the Vols and quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Since that point, the Vols and UCLA essentially have made a trade, as Iamaleava committed to the Bruins, which led to UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar entering the portal and committing to Tennessee. Aguilar was a two-year starter at Appalachian State from 2023-24 before originally transferring to UCLA last winter. Tennessee is coming off its first College Football Playoff appearance in school history, so Heupel is trying to maintain that momentum. How will Aguilar fit in Knoxville, and what other Tennessee football news is unfolding? Tennessee football roster news
UCLA made a splash when it landed Iamaleava, but it also led to Aguilar re-entering the portal and then committing to Tennessee. Aguilar was in line to be the starter after throwing for 6,760 yards across the last two seasons at Appalachian State. He has one more season of eligibility, so he makes sense as a potential one-year starter in Knoxville while Tennessee develops the young quarterbacks on its roster.
Aguilar comes with some question marks after throwing 14 interceptions last season at Appalachian State. Heupel, however, transformed Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton, both players who had fallen out of favor at their prior school, to NFL Draft picks, so this is a potentially great landing spot for Aguilar. The Vols have also had three other players enter the portal this spring, including projected backup safeties Christian Charles and John Slaughter.
