The Detroit Lions’ selection of defensive end Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft has not only added a promising talent to their roster but also provided the team with an additional roster slot, thanks to his unique eligibility under the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.
Hassanein’s journey to the NFL is remarkable. Born in Anaheim, California, he moved to Cairo, Egypt, at the age of six, where he engaged in various sports like wrestling, boxing, and swimming. In 2018, he returned to California to live with his brother, a football coach, who introduced him to the sport. Despite starting football at 18 and facing language barriers, Hassanein’s dedication and athleticism earned him a scholarship to Boise State. There, he excelled, recording 22 sacks and 32 tackles for loss over two seasons and earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors in 2023 and 2024. His performance made him the first Egyptian-born player ever drafted into the NFL.
The Lions’ decision to draft Hassanein was strategic. Due to his international background, he qualifies for a roster exemption, allowing the team to carry an extra player during the offseason. This exemption provides the Lions with flexibility in evaluating talent and managing their roster. Assistant General Manager Ray Agnew praised Hassanein’s relentless playing style and potential for development under defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers. Hassanein himself expressed a strong desire to earn his place, stating, “I want to earn everything. Everything has to be earned.”
