Johni Broome’s basketball odyssey began in Plant City, Florida, where he attended Plant City High School. Standing at 6’10”, Broome’s growth spurt during his high school years set the stage for his future in basketball. He later transferred to Tampa Catholic High School, where he showcased his burgeoning talent, averaging 19.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game as a senior. His exceptional performance earned him the Hillsborough County Player of the Year award, marking him as a standout prospect in the state .

Choosing to play college basketball at Morehead State, Broome quickly made his mark. In his sophomore year (2021–22), he led the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) with 358 rebounds and ranked among the nation’s top five in rebounds per game. His dominance on both ends of the court earned him the OVC Defensive Player of the Year award, making him only the second player in program history to receive that honor.
