Clemson Rowing Finishes Strong at Rocky Top Invite

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Clemson Tigers finished up both days of competition at the Rocky Top Invite Friday evening and Saturday morning in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Throughout the first day, Clemson directly competed against No. 5 Tennessee, No. 14 Duke and No. 17 Central Florida in the V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+, V4+ and 2V4+ heats. The 3v8+ clocked a time of 7:29.162, finishing second in the heat behind the Vols. Despite the fierce competition from ranked foes, the Tigers finished close in each race and defeated the No. 20 North Carolina by six seconds in the V8+ and finished within .7 seconds in the 2V8+.

“We feel pretty good about our first all-out 2k of the season,” said Head Rowing Coach Adrienne Martelli about the first day, “I think every boat learned something from their race today and can’t wait to race again tomorrow.”

On Saturday, the Tigers finished strong with a first-place finish in the 2V8+ Final 2, clocking a time of 6:50.666, putting them ahead of both Minnesota seconds and North Carolina by seven. Clemson finished strong in the 3V8+ Final 2 against the Tennessee 4V8+ boat, crossing just three seconds after the No. 5 Volunteers. The V8+ and the V4+ boats trailed by only eight seconds and seven seconds respectively. The 2V4+ final finished third behind No. 14 Duke squad and Minnesota.

“This weekend was really valuable for seeing where we are, what parts of the race we’re doing well, and what we need to continue to work on. Big shout out the 2V8 on an awesome and commanding race to win the B Final,” said Martelli about the second day of racing, “We’re looking forward to having two weeks of training at home as we prep for the Big 10 Invite down in Sarasota.”

Up next, the Tigers will head down to Sarasota, Florida to compete in the Big 10 Invite on April 18th and 19th.
