Duke basketball upset by rival UNC. What went wrong for the Blue Devils?

The No. 4 Blue Devils (21-2, 10-1) led for 37:39 of the 266th edition of the Tobacco Road Rivalry, up until a Seth Trimble triple gave the No. 14 Tar Heels (19-4, 7-3) their first lead of the night with less than a second left on the clock. Fans stormed the court after Trimble’s triple – his first made 3-pointer of the night – swished through the net. After officials determined 0.4 seconds remained, the floor was cleared and Duke was given one final possession. The ensuing inbound to Isaiah Evans slipped out of his hands as the Tar Heels held on to get their first win over Duke since the 2023-24 season.
Duke entered its rivalry matchup against North Carolina with momentum and expectations, but the Blue Devils left the court frustrated after an upset loss that exposed several issues on both ends of the floor. In a game where intensity, execution, and composure typically decide the outcome, Duke struggled to maintain consistency, allowing UNC to seize control at key moments and protect its advantage down the stretch.
One of the biggest problems for Duke was offensive inconsistency.
