The Notre Dame coaching and recruiting staffs have been on a hot streak recently, creating a ton of buzz in the 2026 class. For the 2027 targets, the Fighting Irish are busy hosting some talented players and building up early relationships. It’s what they haven’t done in 2027 so far, however, that has caught the attention of many.

St. Patrick’s Day is a day every year that Notre Dame utilizes for their Pot of Gold offer event. During this year’s event, the Irish staff extended offers to over 100 recruits from the 2027 class. Not a single offer was extended to a quarterback, which was very interesting.

The ideology, at least for now, is for quarterback coach Gino Guidugli and the staff to get out and see the quarterbacks throw when it’s permitted. That process is thorough without question, but is a bit risky. Notre Dame is seemingly in a good spot with a couple of talented signal callers, but until they off someone, they can only be so far up his list.

One quarterback that the Irish have had close contact with is Mundelein (Ill.) Carmel Catholic standout Trae Taylor, who announced an earlier commitment date of May 1st. The 6-3, 185-pound passer will be selecting between LSU, Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Illinois. Taylor has been vocal that he likes Notre Dame, but without an offer, they aren’t going to be in contention.

In the world of quarterback recruiting, talented signal callers typically like to commit earlier to help put the recruiting class together. With Notre Dame being so deceptive, they are playing a little bit of a dangerous game. The longer they wait, the more potential they have falling behind on some talent.

This issue could become a moot point very shortly if Coach Guidugli extends an offer early in May, which is his plan. Behind the scenes, they are still actively recruiting several quarterbacks such as Malachi Zeigler and Peter Bourque. They could have a strong chance in the end, especially with the latter.
