Cooper Flagg reveals connection with Jon Scheyer amid rookie season
Former Duke star and 2024-25 AP Player of the Year Cooper Flagg recently made an appearance on ESPN, talking about his continued connection with the Blue Devils despite moving on to the NBA.
Despite a brief battle with injuries, Flagg has put together an impressive first season with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 20.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.9 blocks, cementing himself amongst the league’s strongest rookies with his former college roommate Kon Knueppel.
On Wednesday, Flagg spoke about his current relationship with Duke head coach Jon Scheyer.
“Coach Scheyer, he’s reached out a lot of times throughout the year, and we’ve stayed in contact,” Flagg said. “Obviously, we’ve both been pretty busy.”
Despite their conflicting schedules, Flagg did find time to return to campus with his former Duke teammates
. “The All-Star break, all of us went back from last year’s team,” Flagg said. “We were all back and watched two games at home. So, we definitely still have that brotherhood and that connection. That will never go away.”
The duo of Flagg and Knueppel were joined by another top-10 draft pick, Khaman Malauch (Suns) and two second-rounders, Tryese Proctor (Cavaliers) and Sion James (Hornets).
With Dallas already eliminated from playoff contention, Flagg will have six games left to prove himself worthy of the Rookie of the Year award. He’ll return to action Friday against the Orlando Magic.
